The client's brief was a house which would work for their family but would be flexible enough to accommodate their needs in later life. Passivhaus design principles were used to minimise running costs with well insulated walls and roof, extensive glazing to the south (with shading and deep-set windows to prevent overheating) and minimal glazing to the north.
Views towards the church from the primary rooms were an important factor in the siting of the house and in the arrangement of the spaces. The linear form helped maximise the garden and led to the house being organised in two wings - living & sleeping - with the entrance lobby positioned at the intersection.
Architecturally minimal, the bespoke dwelling relies on generous proportions, inside / outside connections, quality materials and careful execution.
